Why Celebrities?


Celebrity endorsements are a time-honored marketing tool. The theory is that borrowing some of a celebrity's star power will create both an awareness of, and an interest in, a given product. According to a 2011 study published in the Journal of Advertsing, the strategy works: the study found that celebrity endorsements produced a 4% growth in revenue (about $10 million a year in added sales of the branded products), and a 0.25% rise in stock returns. It has also been pointed-out that the rise of the Internet has accentuated the value of celebrity endorsements, since consumer attention is more easily captured through social media.

Simply signing an endorsement deal with a brand is starting to look as passe as having no brand partnerships at all, as artists and corporations become intimately involved in ways that would have been unheard of even a decade ago. Over the past three years, corporations have been handing out creative director titles to pop stars like so many studio VP monikers: Lady Gaga’s creative director gig for Polaroid is now in its third year, and Pharrell Williams has been in that position at Karmaloop TV since 2011. Earlier this year, Alicia Keys assumed the mantel at Blackberry, as did Will.i.am for Intel and Justin Timberlake for Bud Light.

Even traditional endorsements have evolved. In January, Beyonce and Taylor Swift both became “brand ambassadors” for Pepsi and Diet Coke, respectively. Beyonce’s deal not only puts Pepsi logos on tour stages and Beyonce’s face on cans, it essentially gives Pepsi an investor role in her future projects, with the soda company providing what it calls a “creative content development fund.” Swift’s deal with Diet Coke is more like a traditional sponsorship in theory, albeit one blown up to huge proportions: Swift has gone so far as to talk up her love for Diet Coke in a “Bon Appetit” interview, and she has appeared holding a can during on-camera appearances.

We book international talent on behalf of fortune 500 corporations, fundraisers, fashion-houses and high net-worth individuals, who are interested in sparkling their events with substantial media attention and interest. Securing celebirty talent for launch events, gala nights and corporate events has proved to be an effective way to drive earned media and PR attention both for brands and individuals.

Our business is to keep current on available options and who the most relevant talent would be for a specific client's event. Most agencies only push acts that they need to get work for to keep them on their roster, we do not face that problem, our client is YOU, not the talent. Since recognizing the importance of agile marketing in international startup companies, Bookmark invested tremendous efforts to operate and maintain an affluent technology-oriented devision. We represent dozens of international startup companies that recognized celebrity endorsement as a primary marketing strategy, both by the means of an ongoing endorsement, one-off social media engagement and/or strategic investment by a celebrity. Additionally, we are the only agency to date that accepts equity as compensation.

It's no surprise that advertisers are increasingly leveraging social networking and celebrities to attract consumers. After all, Internet users spend more time on social networks than any other category of websites, according to a report last year by Nielson, the media measurement company. Celebrities are valuable to advertisers, but so are celebrities' fans on social media sites, according to a separate study by Nielsen. The study found that 64% of American adults who follow a celebrity online also follow a brand, and that a celebrity follower is four times more likely to follow a brand than the average U.S. adult online. The Nielsen study also found that such fans are also more likely to offer advice and opinions to fellow online consumers.
